Job Specification: Health and Safety Manager (Manufacturing)

Position Overview

The Health and Safety Manager is responsible for overseeing workplace safety and compliance within a manufacturing environment. This role involves developing, implementing, and maintaining health and safety policies, conducting risk assessments, ensuring compliance with legislation, and promoting a culture of safety across the organization.

 

Key Responsibilities

  1. Policy Development and Implementation:
    • Develop and implement comprehensive health and safety policies and procedures tailored to the manufacturing environment.
    • Regularly review and update safety policies to reflect regulatory changes or workplace developments.
  2. Risk Management:
    • Conduct regular risk assessments and hazard analyses for machinery, processes, and workspaces.
    • Develop mitigation strategies to reduce workplace risks and prevent accidents.
  3. Compliance and Reporting:
    • Ensure compliance with relevant local, national, and international health and safety regulations.
    • Prepare and submit compliance reports to regulatory authorities as required.
  4. Training and Development:
    • Design and deliver safety training programs for employees, contractors, and management.
    • Ensure that staff are knowledgeable about workplace safety practices and emergency procedures.
  5. Incident Management:
    • Investigate workplace accidents, incidents, and near misses to determine root causes.
    • Develop corrective actions and ensure timely implementation to prevent recurrence.
  6. Safety Culture Promotion:
    • Lead initiatives to promote a culture of safety and wellbeing.
    • Collaborate with department heads to integrate safety practices into daily operations.
  7. Safety Equipment and Systems Oversight:
    • Monitor the maintenance and use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and safety systems.
    • Conduct regular inspections of equipment, facilities, and systems to ensure compliance and functionality.
  8. Documentation and Record-Keeping:
    • Maintain detailed records of safety inspections, incidents, training sessions, and policy updates.
    • Generate regular safety performance reports for senior management.

 

Required Skills and Qualifications

  • Educational Background:
    • Bachelors degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Engineering, Environmental Science, or a related field.
    • Certification in health and safety management (e.g., NEBOSH, OSHA, ISO 45001) preferred.
  • Experience:
    • Minimum of 5 yearsexperience in a health and safety role within a manufacturing or industrial environment.
    • Proven track record of improving safety performance and implementing successful initiatives.
  • Technical Knowledge:
    • Familiarity with manufacturing processes, machinery, and safety requirements.
    • Knowledge of safety management systems (e.g., ISO 45001) and regulatory frameworks.
  • Soft Skills:
    • Strong leadership and interpersonal skills to drive a safety-first culture.
    • Excellent communication and training skills to effectively convey safety procedures.
    • Analytical and problem-solving abilities to identify risks and develop effective solutions.
  • Technology Proficiency:
    • Competency with safety management software and Microsoft Office Suite.
    • Familiarity with incident reporting tools and data analysis for safety metrics.

 

Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)

  • Reduction in workplace incidents and accidents.
  • Percentage of employees trained in safety protocols.
  • Compliance audit scores and adherence to regulatory requirements.
  • Timeliness of incident investigation and corrective actions.

 

Work Environment

  • Primarily based in a manufacturing facility with exposure to production floors, machinery, and potentially hazardous materials.
  • May require occasional travel to other facilities or regulatory meetings.
