Head of Tax

We are hiring for our client, a growing specialist tax advisory business based in Belfast, as they seek to appoint an experienced Head of Tax to lead their tax advisory function.

This is a senior and highly visible Head of Tax role, suited to an experienced tax professional with strong Corporation Tax and R&D tax relief expertise. The successful candidate will take ownership of the advisory function, working closely with senior leadership, clients and professional referral networks to support continued business growth.

The Role

As Head of Tax, you will:

• Lead and manage the tax advisory function across a broad UK client base
• Provide high-quality technical advice across Corporation Tax and R&D tax relief
• Review and oversee technical tax work, ensuring accuracy, quality and compliance
• Support the preparation and submission of tax claims and advisory reports
• Build strong client relationships and develop a deep understanding of client needs
• Identify opportunities to add value to existing clients through additional tax advisory services
• Generate new business opportunities through referrals, client relationships and professional networks
• Work closely with senior leadership to support the continued growth of the tax business
• Mentor and support junior members of the team where required
• Maintain up-to-date technical knowledge across relevant areas of UK tax legislation
• Attend occasional client meetings or business development meetings, with minimal travel expected

The Person

The successful Head of Tax will be an experienced tax professional with strong technical ability and the confidence to operate at a senior client-facing level.

Essential criteria:

• Strong Corporation Tax experience
• CTA and/or FCA qualification
• Excellent technical knowledge of R&D tax relief
• Ability to manage client relationships and provide commercially focused advice
• Strong communication skills, with the ability to explain complex tax matters clearly
• Commercial mindset, with an interest in business development and referral generation
• Ability to work independently and take ownership of a senior tax function

Desirable criteria:

• Previous experience at Head of Tax, Senior Tax Manager, Associate Director or Tax Director level
• Experience within practice, advisory, consultancy or a specialist tax environment
• Existing network of finance leaders, CFOs or professional referral contacts
• Experience mentoring or managing junior tax professionals
